Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Amaranth is great for attracting the ground beetle. This predatory beetle eats slugs, snails, slug and snail eggs, caterpillars and weed seed.
  • Low growing limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees, hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids and can be dug in as green manure at the end of the season.
  • Calendula (Pot marigold) attracts predatory insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who love to feast on aphids.
  • Aphids are attracted to nasturtiums. Grow these flowers close by as a sacrificial plant.

Soil Preperation

Add well rotted manure or compost to the soil a few weeks before sowing or planting. Remove any weeds and 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting add some general purpose organic fertilizer to the bed. The soil should be a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. When the seedlings start to germinate move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. Keep the compost moist but do not overwater. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 1 strong seedling per module. 2 - 3 weeks later plant out into their final growing position. Harden off over a few days before planting out. Plant at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well.

Direct Sowing

Sow 1 seed every 2 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin out in stages until the plants are 25 cm apart. The larger thinning's can be eaten.

Growing On

Weed often to keep competing plants under control. Water well especially in dry weather otherwise the plants may run to seed. Endive is naturally bitter in flavour, however the leaves inside the heart will naturally be sweeter as they will have been blanched. However if an even less bitter taste is preferred the plants can be blanched further by simply covering the whole endive with a container when it is around 10 - 12 weeks old.
To blanch, select a few plants at a time. To prevent rotting, the plants must be dry. Cover each selected endive with a container or flower pot. If the plants are too wide to fit under the container loosely tie up the leaves with some garden twine before sliding the container over them. Cover any drainage holes in the containers to exclude all light. 3 weeks later (in summer) and 5 weeks later in winter the covered endive should be ready to harvest.
If the winter is fairly mild and the endive hearts are protected under a cloche or fleece the large endive plants may survive the winter. However late autumn sowings which have not formed a heart before the severe frosts arrive because they have been kept small by regular picking of the outer leaves are very frost hardy and if protected are more likely to survive a severe frost than large endive plants.

Harvesting

Large endive plants which has formed a heart should be harvested before any severe frosts arrive, ideally by late November. Cut the heart with a sharp knife, they will keep in the fridge for 2 - 3 weeks in a polythene bag. Hearting endive can also be stored in boxes in a shed or garage for several weeks if the whole plant is lifted, including the roots and some soil.
Autumn sown endive can be picked regularly over the winter and spring months as a cut and come again plant. Pick the outer leaves only, leaving the small middle leaves to mature for the next harvest. Endive will naturally run to seed in late May.

TIP

Problems with slugs & snails? Try placing beer traps close to the affected plants. A jar half filled with stale beer, half buried in the soil works well as a tempting lure.
