Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

For best results, sow Sea Holly seeds in early spring or late autumn on the surface of damp compost in trays or pots. The seeds must be exposed to a cold period for germination to occur.
Lightly cover with 2 mm of fine compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a coldframe. Keep the compost moist but not sodden.
The seeds may take some time to germinate (depending on the time of year and the temperature). If the spring is mild and germination is very slow, place the tray in a polythene bag and seal, then place in a fridge at around 4 degrees centigrade for 3 - 5 weeks. This cold temperature will help to bring the seeds out of dormancy.
After this cold period, place the tray in a propagator at a temperature of 16 - 22 degrees centigrade for 3 - 4 weeks. Germination can be very slow and erratic.
Repeat the cold spell in the fridge if germination has still not occurred after this time, then return to the heat for a further 3 - 4 weeks. When large enough to handle, transplant individual seedlings as and when they appear into individual pots.
Grow on in a protected area such as a coldframe. Plant out the following spring when all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out so that the plants gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions.

Direct Sowing

Scatter the seeds over a well prepared seed bed in spring or autumn where the flowers are to grow. Aim for approx. 2cm between each seed. Lightly rake to cover the seeds. Firm down using the back of the rake or a spade. Keep the soil moist but not sodden. When large enough to handle thin and transplant to 30 cm apart.

Growing On

TIP

The plants will benefit from having a little protection from winter winds in their first year of growing outdoors.
