Eschscholzia Mission Bells produces tissue-thin cup-shaped flowers in a wide range of colours from fiery shades of orange and yellow. The blue-green ferny foliage with it's slender stems carry a single flower which open fully only when sunny however even when closed they are still very colourful and attractive.

If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

For early blooms sow seeds indoors in February to March on the surface of moist compost in pots, modules or trays.
Cover with a light sprinkling of compost or vermiculite.
Place in a propagator or a clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above in a dark location.
Once they start to germinate remove from the bag or propagator and place in a well lit location in cooler conditions. Protect from frost and avoid contact with direct hot sun at this point.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant to 7.5 cm pots and grow on in cooler frost free condition.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce the chances of shock.

Direct Sowing

In March to May, August to September, direct sow seeds into rows 15 - 20 cm apart in a well prepared seed bed where the flowers are to grow. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Cover the seeds with soil and water well.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 15 - 20 cm apart.
Autumn sowings will flower in late spring.

Growing On

Water newly planted Californian Poppy's well until established.
Established plants will need watering regularly especially in dry conditions or if growing in containers.

TIP

Dead-head spent flowers to prolong the flowering season and to prevent them self seeding as they can become invasive.
