Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Fennel do not like to be transplanted and are best sown direct.

Direct Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per station, 30 cm apart in rows 40 cm wide at the depth suggested above. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Water the newly sown seeds well.
Thin to one strong seedling per station.
Thinning's do not transplant well.

Growing On

Water young fennel plants well until established, however do not overwater.
Water established plants well in dry conditions. Container grown plants will need watering more often.
The production of flowers will hinder the growth of leaves. To keep the plants producing leaves for longer remove the flower heads as they appear.
Divide the roots in late autumn if more plants are required or allow to self seed.
If allowed to self seed, remove any unwanted seedlings when young. Older plants will have grown a deep tap root which can make lifting difficult.

The leaves, seeds and fleshy stems can be eaten.
Harvesting of the leaves and stems can start as soon as the plants are large enough and are growing strong.
The seeds will be ready to harvest when they are ripe and have turned brown in autumn.
To dry the seeds, carefully snip the brown flower heads. Place in a paper bag. Tie the bag, tap and shake to release the seeds.
The seeds will need to be fully dry before storing. Thinly scatter the seeds on a piece of clean cloth and dry in a well ventilated area away from direct sunlight. After 10 - 14 days they should be dry.
Store the dried seeds in an airtight container in a cool dark location.

The plants will easily self seed and can become invasive. Remove flower heads if self seeding is not desired.
