330 Seeds.

Other Names - Bulbing Fennel, Sweet Fennel…

This award winning florence fennel variety forms large, rounded, well filled bulbs with an amazing celery - aniseeds like flavour which is delicious when eaten raw in salads or when added to cooked dishes. Zefa Fino is highly productive with upright strong foliage and has a good resistance to bolting.

  • High bolt resistance.
  • Productive, producing good sized, well filled bulbs.
  • Award winner - RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds

Sowing Months - May - June

Harvest - August - October

Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Fennel inhibits the growth of many plants and may cause bolting if grown too close together. As dill belongs to the same family the two can happily grow together.
  • The leaves of the comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer ideal for giving a nutrient boost to fennel plants.

Soil Preperation

Florence fennel needs fertile and moisture retentive soil. Add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost a few months before sowing or planting. Remove any weeds and add some general purpose organic fertilizer to the area 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting. The soil should be a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Do not sow Florence fennel too early. Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as the seeds start to germinate move to an area with good daylight, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. Keep the compost moist but do not overwater. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per module.
2 - 3 weeks later, depending on speed of growth plant out into their final growing position. Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock. Plant out at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well.

Direct Sowing

Do not direct sow too early. Sow 2 - 3 seeds per station, 30 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 1 strong seedling per station. Keep the soil moist.

Growing On

Water well especially in dry weather. Too little moisture may force the plants to run to seed prematurely or the bulb will be small in size and dry in texture. Florence fennel will benefit from a thick mulch of compost before the hot summer weather arrives to help keep the surrounding soil moist. After about 6 - 7 weeks the bulbs will start to swell.
For a white coloured bulb start earthing up the bulb with surrounding soil when it is about the size of a golf ball. Carry on covering the bulb in stages until it is ready to harvest at the size of a tennis ball. If the plant is about to run to seed one of the first signs to look for is the elongation of the small bulb. When this is noticed it is advisable to harvest and eat the small bulb at this point as it will not grow any larger and if left it will become inedible.

To harvest, cut the base with a sharp knife and trim the leaves. All the bulbs need to be lifted before the first autumn frosts arrive. Large sized bulbs can be stored up until Christmas.

To help prevent bolting, ensure the soil is kept moist and the plants are in shade during hot sunny periods. Sow at the correct time of year.
