Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow Gerbera seeds on the surface of loam-based compost such as John Innes No 2 in trays, modules or pots.
Firm down the seeds but do not cover.
Place the newly sown seeds in a propagator or a clear plastic bag and seal. Keep the container in a well lit area however away from direct sunlight. Light will help the seeds to germination.
When gerbera seedlings are large enough to handle prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots (one seedling per pot).
Grow on in cooler conditions however protect from frost.
When the gerbera plants are strong and all risk of frost has passed plant out into their final growing position.
To avoid shock harden off over 7 - 10 days so that they can be introduced to the outdoor temperature slowly.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Once planted out water frequently until the plants are growing strong.
Once the plants start to flower they will benefit from a regular liquid feed every 3 - 4 weeks throughout the growing season.
Water well during the growing season.
As this plant is a tender perennial it is recommended to move container grown gerbera indoors into a frost free, well lit location such as a conservatory or greenhouse before the first autumn frosts arrive. Over the winter months reduce the watering and keep the compost just moist. Return the daisies to the outdoors when all risk of frost has past the following spring.

Over wintered container grown gerbera should be re- potted annually in the spring.
