Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Amaranth is great for attracting the ground beetle. This predatory beetle eats slugs, snails, slug and snail eggs, caterpillars and weed seed.
  • Try growing lavender in containers. When gourd plants start to flower position a few lavender plants in the area to attract pollinating insects. Move the lavender to other areas of the garden as and when needed.
  • Borage and lavender are great plants for attracting pollinating insects into the area which in turn will pollinate the cucumber flowers.
  • Low growing Limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees, hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids and can be dug in as green manure at the end of the season.
  • One of the best plants for attract pollinating insects is the Phacelia. It also attracts aphid eating insects such as ladybirds and lacewings. At the end of the season it can be dug into the soil as a green manure.

Soil Preperation

Add some well rotted manure or compost to the growing area a few months before planting. 1 - 2 weeks before planting add some general purpose organic fertilizer and remove any weeds.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 1 seed on its edge per 5 - 7 cm pot. Ensure adequate heat is available for fast germination. Once germination starts reduce the heat and move the seedlings to a well lit area, a windowsill or warm greenhouse is ideal. 2 - 3 weeks after germination depending on plant growth plant out into their final growing position. The plants will need hardening off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock. Discard any weak or unhealthy looking plants. Plant out at the distance advised above.
If the soil is poor with very little organic matter it will be beneficial at this stage to dig a trench about 30 cm wide and 30 cm deep for each individual plant to be planted in. Fill the holes with well rotted manure and/or good quality compost. The stems of the plants are very fragile and easy to snap or damage. Plant out carefully, firm the soil around each plant and water well. Cover the newly planted gourd plants with horticultural fleece until growth is strong.

Direct Sowing

Gourd plants are vulnerable to the cold. It is best to start seeds indoors then a few weeks later plant out.

Growing On

Weed often to keep unwanted plants under control. The plants are fast growing, with large leaves, long stems and require plenty of room. Water well in dry weather, water around the base of the plants rather than over the leaves. They will benefit from a mulch of compost to help retain the moisture in the surrounding soil during hot summer days.

Harvesting

Gourds are left on the plant to mature and picked in October or just before the first frosts arrive. Gourds are not for eating and are used for decorative purposes only.
To ensure the gourd can be kept for a long time it is vital that the area where the fruit stem and fruit meets is not damaged in anyway when harvesting otherwise mould will set in and spoil the gourd. To reduce the chance of damaging this area, when harvesting rather than cutting the hard fruit stem, cut the plant stem on either side instead so the gourd and stem resemble the letter 'T'. Do not keep any damaged gourds.
If the gourds are displayed in a dry area at around room temperature they will last as beautiful and unique decorations for a long time.

TIP

No fruit or rotting fruit? - This happens when the temperature in early summer is too cold for adequate pollination to take place. Once the temperature warms up the problem should correct itself.
