Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow indoors from March onwards on the surface of moist compost in trays, modules or pots. Cover with compost or vermiculite.
Place in a clear polythene bag or propagator. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and place in a cooler location with good daylight exposure. Protect from hot sun and frost at this stage.
Grow on in a greenhouse or cold frame until the plants are growing strong.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots. Plant out when all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.

Direct Sowing

Sow direct in April - May or September - October in 30 cm drills in a well prepared seed bed where the plants are to flower. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Cover with a thin layer of soil and water well.
Autumn sowings will produce early flowers the following spring (as early as April). They will need to be covered with a cloche over the winter months.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin out to 10 - 15 cm apart.
The stronger thinning's can be transplanted elsewhere in the garden.

Growing On

The young plants will need watering frequently until established.
Water established plants well in dry spells.

TIP

Douglasii is an annul however it will self seed freely. To prevent self seeding especially in the vegetable garden dig the plants into the soil as green manure before the seeds are formed.
