Other Names - Knotted Marjoram...

Sweet marjoram is a low growing, spreading perennial and is happy to grow in containers. It has a similar aroma to oregano however a little sweeter. The tender fresh leaves can be harvested all through the summer months and dried for winter use. The flowers produced at the end of the summer are also edible and attractive to bees. Sweet marjoram is often grown as an annual as it will only survive over the winter in milder areas. For a constant supply of fresh leaves over the winter months simply pot up and bring indoors in autumn.

Soil Preperation

Add a little well rotted manure or compost to the soil a few weeks before sowing. If the soil is heavy clay or the drainage is poor mix in a generous amount of sand and gravel to the soil also. Remove any weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost in modules or small pots.
Cover the seeds with a light sprinkling of vermiculite or fine compost.
Place in a propagator or clear plastic bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location. Protect from frost.
When the marjoram seedlings are large enough to handle thin to 4 - 7 strong seedlings per pot.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame.
Plant out after all risk of frost has passed, harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.

Direct Sowing

Germinate indoors for best results.


Growing On

Water the young plants regularly until established.
Established plants will need watering frequently especially in dry weather or if growing in pots.



Harvesting

Harvesting can start as soon as the plants are established and growing strong.
Pick little and often to encourage more leaves to grow.
The leaves freeze well.

TIP

The leaves can be dried and are best harvested just before the plants start to flower. The flavour of the leaves will be at their strongest at this time.
