Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 3 - 4 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as the seedlings start to germinate move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse. Mizuna grows fast especially in summer and autumn, 1 - 2 weeks after germination plant out into their final growing position. Winter sowings will need to be left to grow larger before planting out.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days so that the plant can acclimatise to the outdoor temperature slowly. Plant at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well. Summer sown mizuna will benefit from a covering of a fine insect mesh to protect the young leaves from insect damage. Winter and spring sown crops will benefit from a covering of horticultural fleece.

Direct Sowing

Sow thinly (aim for 1 seed per 1 cm) at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. Summer sowings will benefit from being covered by some fine insect mesh to protect the young seedlings from insect damage.
Winter and spring sowings should be sown indoors for planting out a few weeks later. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 5 cm apart for small plants, 10 cm apart for medium size plants and 20 cm apart for large plants.
Sow summer crops little and often, every 10 - 14 days. For autumn, winter and spring harvest sow one sowing in September one in early November then one in late February.

Growing On

Water well in dry weather. Weed often to keep competing plants under control. Mizuna is hardy and can survive outdoors uncovered over a normal winter, however if covered with a cloche or horticultural fleece before the cold frosty weather arrives the plants will produce better quality leaves.

Harvesting

This fast growing plant can be ready to harvest in 4 - 5 weeks after sowing. To harvest, cut across all of the leaves with a sharp knife or scissors about 3 - 4 cm above ground level. New leaves will regrow and in a few weeks another crop will be ready to harvest.
After about 3 - 4 harvests the plants will normally run to seed. The growth of mizuna leaves will slow down over the winter months however by February growth will start to grow strong again until April when the plants naturally run to seeds. The flowers and stems produced can also be eaten.

TIP

The leaves become hotter with age. If mild flavoured leaves are preferred keep the plants small by harvesting regularly.
