Nemophila Insignis is a low-growing carpeting annual producing large buttercup-like deep blue flowers from June up until the first frosts arrive. It produces mounds of attractive pale green feathery leaves and is idea for growing at the front of borders, summer beds, rock gardens and window boxes.

Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the seeds direct where the flowers are to grow.

Direct Sowing

Sow the seeds in a well prepared seedbed where the plants are to flower in rows 15 cm apart at the depth suggested above. The soil should have been worked to a fine tilth before sowing.
Cover the seeds with soil and water well.
Autumn sowings will produce early flowers the following spring in April - May.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin to 20 cm apart.

Growing On

Water the young plants well until established.
Nemophila rarely needs feeding especially if organic matter has been added to the soil before planting.


To ensure the plants stay productive in dry conditions, water the plants well, keeping the soil moist but not sodden.
