Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 5 - 8 seeds on the surface of moist compost in small pots or modules.
Cover the seeds with a light sprinkling of fine compost.
Place in a propagator or clear plastic bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Germination can be very slow. Keep the compost moist but not sodden.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location for a few days. Protect from frost.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame until the plants are growing strong and all risk of frost has passed.
A July sowing will produce fresh parsley over the winter and spring months and can be grown on a sunny windowsill, conservatory, greenhouse, polytunnel, cold frame or under a cloche. Plant out into a good sized, deep container, avoid overcrowding.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out if required.

Direct Sowing

Parsley seeds are very slow to germinate and are best sown indoors.

Growing On

Water the young parsley plants well until established.
Winter grown parsley is hardy and can tolerate some frost, however for best results protect with horticultural fleece or grow undercover in a greenhouse, windowsill or under a cloche.
Water established plants frequently especially in dry weather or if growing in containers. However avoid overwatering as they dislike sodden, waterlogged conditions especially during the winter months.

Harvesting

Harvesting can start as soon as the plants are established and growing strong.
Harvest the whole stems rather than sections of the leaves. This will encourage more to grow.
A regular picking will keep the plants small and the leaves tender.
Parsley grown over the winter months can be harvested up until the end of April. Avoid overharvesting in the depth of winter as the plants may struggle to recover.
Leaves can be dried.

TIP

Fresh parsley leaves can be frozen in ice cube trays for future use.
