Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

To help germination it is advisable to soak the seeds overnight in clean water. (This will help to soften the hard shell)
Rinse the seeds well before sowing on the surface of moist compost in modules, trays or pots.
Cover with compost.
Place the container in a warm propagator or if preferred cover the container with a clear polythene bag and seal.
Place in a warm, lit area as light will aid germination, however avoid direct sunlight at this point.
When the seeds start to germinate remove from the bag or propagator and position in an area with good daylight exposure and a reduced temperature. Keep the vulnerable seedlings away from frost and protect from direct hot sun.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle carefully transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots. The roots are very fragile. Grow on undercover in a warm, frost free environment.
If the plants out grow their pots, transplant into a slightly larger pot as and when needed. Handle with care as the roots are very fragile. Autumn sowings may need repotting several times before planting out in spring.
If the plants are to be grown indoors, in the conservatory or greenhouse, they should be planted into a large container no smaller than 35 cm in diameter. If growing outdoors, plant out in spring after all risk of frost has passed. Harden off over 10 - 15 days before planting out to prevent shock.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water well until established.
The plants will benefit from a regular liquid feed during the growing months.
Water well during the hot summer months especially if growing in containers.
To help outdoor grown plants survive over the winter months apply a thick mulch to the area every autumn.

The Passion Flower can be very vigorous. Keep an eye on neighbouring plants to ensure they are not being smothered. Trim if required.
