Other Names - Lacy Phacelia, Scorpion Weed, Fiddleneck…

Phacelia Tanacetifolia is an attractive, easy to grow annual which flowers for a long period, has a beautiful fragrance and makes a superb cut flower. The lavender-coloured flowers are irresistible to bees, hoverflies, lacewings and other beneficial aphid eating insects making this plant a very useful companion plant in the vegetable garden. The fast growing plants provide attractive ground cover which help to supress weeds. When dug into the soil Phacelia makes excellent green manure adding valuable organic matter and nutrients to the soil ready for the next crop to benefit.

  • Dual purpose - grow for it's attractive, scented flowers or for green manure.
  • Protects empty ground from erosion and leaching.
  • Improves poor and heavy clay soils.

Sowing Guide

Before sowing, lightly tread over the recently raked soil. Scatter the seeds as evenly as possible over the surface. Or if preferred sow the seeds thinly at the depth suggested above in drills 30 cm apart. The seeds have been coated with a natural white colouring (these seeds have not been treated with a chemical or any fungicide). They are naturally very dark in colour which makes even scattering difficult, the white coloured seeds will make sowing much easier.
Carefully rake over to cover the seeds.
Water well.

Growing On

Water the young seedlings well until established.
If Phacelia is grown for it's attractive flowers rather than for green manure, thin the plants to 25 - 30 cm apart. A regular cutting of the fragrant blooms will encourage more to grow. Phacelia has a vase life of 5 - 6 days.
Established plants need regular watering especially in dry conditions.

Digging In

For green manure, the plants can be cut down using a garden spade, shears, a lawnmower or strimmer after 2 - 3 months of growing or just before flowering.
Chop the stems up into smaller pieces and allow to wilt on the surface of the soil for a few days.
Dig the plants into the soil at the depth of 20 - 25 cm with a sharp spade or rotovator.
Avoid growing any vegetables in the soil for at least 3 - 4 weeks after digging in so that the green manure has time to decompose.

If some phacelia plants are left to flower, they will attract butterflies, bees and other beneficial insects into the garden.
