Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

For spring sowings - Sow poppy seeds on the surface of moist compost in trays modules or pots.
Firm the seeds however do not cover.
Place in a propagator or a clear plastic bag and seal.
Keep the sown seeds in the light as this will aid germination, however keep away from strong sun at this point.
When the seeds start to germinate remove from the bag or propagator and position in an area with good daylight exposure and a reduced temperature. Keep the vulnerable seedlings away from frost.
Transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots when the seedlings are large enough to handle.
Grow on in a well lit cool location until the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out so that the plants can acclimatise to the outdoor temperature.
For autumn sowings - Sow as described above however place the containers in a cool greenhouse or cold frame to germinate. Transplant and grow on over the winter months in a cool frost free, well lit location and plant out the following spring when all risk of frost has passed.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

Water newly planted papavers regularly until established.
Dead-head as soon as the poppies begin to drop their petals as this will help to prolong the flowering season.
The stems will need to be staked especially in exposed areas. Water well during hot dry weather.
Once the poppies have finished flowering cut the plants back to ground level. Add some organic fertiliser to the base of the plants and water well. This will encourage new growth and if the weather is kind a new flush of flowers may appear again in late summer. The papaver plants will benefit from being lifted and divided every three years to prevent overcrowding and loss of vigour.
TIP

Avoid using fertilisers high in nitrogen as this may cause the papaver petals to fall off prematurely.
