Add some well rotted manure or compost to the soil a few weeks before sowing. If the soil is heavy clay or the drainage is poor mix in a generous amount of sand and gravel to the soil also. Remove any weeds from the area.

Sow 5 - 6 seeds on the surface of moist compost in 4 cm module or small pots at the depth suggested above.
Cover with a light sprinkling of vermiculite or compost.
Place in a propagator or clear plastic bag and seal, germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location. Protect from frost.
Thin to 2 - 3 strong seedlings per module or pot.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame.
Plant out when all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.
Sow the seeds thinly 1 - 2 cm apart in a well prepared seed bed from April - mid August in rows 30 cm wide at the depth suggested above. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Water the newly sown seeds well. Keep the soil moist especially in dry weather.
Thin in stages until eventually the young plants are 30 cm apart. The thinning's can be eaten.
Water the newly planted sorrel well until established.
Water established plants frequently in dry conditions. Pot grown plants will need watering more frequently.
Growth will slow down in autumn.
Remove any damaged, yellowing or decaying leaves before winter sets in.
Cover with a cloche or fleece to overwinter.
When the plants are growing strong harvest handfuls of leaves by cutting the stems with a sharp knife 2 - 3 cm above soil level.
Avoid picking too many leaves at one time so the plants can recover.
Early spring pickings should be done sparingly until growth becomes strong.
The leaves are best eaten fresh however sorrel can be stored in the fridge for 5 - 7 days in a polythene bag.
Sorrel is a long lived perennial and can produce zesty leaves for 10+ years.
