Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Peas are good companion plants to grow next to rocket especially the taller varieties as they can create some welcomed shade on hot sunny days which will help to keep the soil moist and prevent the rocket from bolting under the stress of the hot sun.
  • Other good examples of shade giving plants are climbing French beans and runner beans.
  • Mint helps to deter the flea beetle however it is advisable to grow this perennial herb in containers as mint can be very invasive. The containers can be easily moved around the garden to help protect vulnerable crops as and when needed.

Soil Preperation

Summer grown spinach often runs to seed prematurely if the soil is dry. To help with moisture retention add some well rotted manure or compost to the soil a few months before sowing or planting. The soil should be a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. Once germination has started move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. 2 - 3 weeks after germination (depending on speed of growth) plant out. Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out. Plant out at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plants and water well.

Direct Sowing

Sow 1 seed every 1 - 2 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. Thin out in stages so that eventually the plants are 6 cm apart. The thinning's should be large enough to eat.
Spinach for summer harvests should be sown little and often. A fortnightly sowing will keep the kitchen in good supply of fresh leaves over the summer months.

Growing On

Spinach grown during the summer months must be watered frequently to thrive. Dry soil will make the plants run to seed prematurely. The plants will also benefit greatly from having some shade during hot summer days as the stress from the heat can also make the plants run to seed. If neighbouring plants do not offer any shade, set up some temporary shade to cover the bed or if growing in containers move to a cooler and shaded area until the temperature cools down again.

Harvesting

Start to harvest spinach when the leaves are small but at a size worth while picking. Pick outer leaves first, they should still be young and tender. Pick regularly to encourage more leaves to grow.
When harvesting over the summer months it is possible to remove up to a third of the leaves from each plant at a time without affecting the development of the plants.
To avoid damaging the roots when harvesting, cut the leaves with scissors or a sharp knife rather than tugging on them.

TIP

Spinach leaves can grow large. Regular pickings will keep the leaves small and tender.
