Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Measure 3 tablespoons of sprouting seeds. Rinse thoroughly under cold water and drain well. Place the seeds in a clean bowl and cover the seeds with clean cold water and allow to soak for 12 hours at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. Drain the seeds after this time.
Rinse thoroughly under cold water and drain well. To prevent the seeds from rotting the draining must be done thoroughly. Spread the well drained seeds evenly in a clean container or sprouter, keep at room temperature and away from direct sunlight. Do not keep in a closed cupboard as sprouts need good air circulation to grow healthy.
Every 8 - 12 hours rinse the seeds thoroughly in clean luke warm water and DRAIN WELL. Repeat this over the next 3 - 5 days or until the sprouts are about 3 - 4 cm long.
TIP - Always rinse and drain thoroughly.

Growing On

Some people prefer to consume fenugreek sprouts before they have formed their leaves and without any greening. However if you prefer them green, move the container or sprouter to an area with good daylight exposure to green up the leaves, however avoid direct exposure to hot sun. Once the leaves of the sprouts have turned green they are ready to eat. The greening of the leaves will take very little time.
Rinse the sprouts thoroughly and drain well, repeat several times. After the final rinse some people prefer to remove the seed hulls at this point.
To remove the hulls, place the sprouts in a large bowl of cold clean water. Carefully loosen the sprout mass and gently dunk them under the water a few times and agitate the water. The hulls will float to the surface, skim the surface to remove the seed hulls. Repeat this as many times as required. Drain the sprouts thoroughly.

Harvesting

Sprouts are best eaten fresh however they can be stored in the fridge for 4 - 5 days in a polythene bag or a sealed container. Soggy wet sprouts will not store well. Allow the sprouts to dry for 6 - 8 hours at room temperature before storing in the fridge.
Cleanliness is paramount when growing sprouts. Use clean seed specially selected for sprouting purposes. Containers and sprouting vessels should be sterile and washed thoroughly between each crop. Sterilize the containers when necessary.
Poor rinsing and poor draining will result in a poor crop. Use plenty of clean water when rinsing and spend some time ensuring the seeds are thoroughly drained. Seeds sitting in a pool of water will start to rot in no time.

TIP

NEVER eat mouldy sprouts. If in any doubt throw them away, sterilize the equipment and start again.
