Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Calendula (Pot marigold) attracts predatory insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who love to feast on aphids.
  • Cabbage white butterflies are drawn to nasturtiums. Try growing these flowers close by as a sacrificial plant. They will help to draw the pest away from the brassica crop.
  • Try growing a crop of white mustard nearby as a sacrificial crop. The mustard will help to draw the flea beetle away from the crop as the pest normally favours this leaf.
  • Mint helps to deter the flea beetle however it is advisable to grow this perennial herb in containers as mint can be very invasive. The containers can be moved around vulnerable crops as and when needed.

Soil Preperation

Add some well rotted manure or compost a few months before planting (spring is ideal). 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting add some general purpose organic fertilizer to the area. Remove weeds and add lime to the soil if required, brassica plants prefer alkaline soils. The soil should be a fine tilth.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as germination starts reduce the heat and move to an area with good daylight exposure. When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per module. 2 - 3 weeks later (depending on speed of growth) plant out.
Harden the plants over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce the chances of shock. Plant at the distance and row distance suggested above. Brassicas dislike loose soil. Firm the soil well around each plant and water well. Cover the crop with fine insect mesh to keep birds and other brassica pests away.

Direct Sowing

Avoid sowing too early as the plants may run to seed before the root has time to grow large. Sow 3 seeds per station 20 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well.
To keep brassica pests such as the flea beetle away cover the bed with a fine insect mesh. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per station. Cover the bed again with the insect mesh as soon as thinning is completed.

Growing On

Weed often and water well every 5 - 10 days in dry weather (deep watering). Keep an eye on pest damage, remove pests immediately to minimize damage.

Harvesting

Swede roots can start to be harvested in early autumn and the whole crop should have been lifted by the end of April. The roots are at their best when no bigger than a grapefruit in size.
Lift the swede with the help of a fork or spade. The whole crop can be lifted by December and stored in a shed or garage in sacks or boxes of sand or compost. If preferred however the roots can be left in the ground unprotected over the winter months up until April and picked as and when needed. To store, cut the leaves with a sharp knife and trim the root, do not store damaged or small roots as they will not store well.

TIP

If fine insect mesh is used to protect the crop from brassica pests make sure any gaps or holes are closed and secured as pests are very good at finding gaps!
