The swede Marian produces a cream coloured sweet flavoured root with a purple top. It is a frost hardy variety that will store well. The Marian has excellent resistance to mildew and club root. Its pale yellow flesh is delicious when mashed with potatoes or diced into a hearty winter stew.
Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds
Sowing Months - June - July
Harvest - September - April
Add some well rotted manure or compost a few months before planting (the previous autumn is ideal). 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting add some general purpose organic fertilizer to the area. Remove weeds and add lime to the soil if required as brassica plants prefer alkaline soils.

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as germination starts reduce the heat and move to an area with good daylight exposure. When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per module. 2 - 3 weeks later (depending on speed of growth) plant out.
Harden the plants over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce the chances of shock. Plant at the distance and row distance suggested above. Brassicas dislike loose soil. Firm the soil well around each plant and water well. Cover the crop with fine insect mesh to keep birds and other brassica pests away.
Avoid sowing too early as the plants may run to seed before the root has time to grow large. Sow 3 seeds per station 20 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well.
To keep brassica pests such as the flea beetle away cover the bed with a fine insect mesh. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per station. Cover the bed again with the insect mesh as soon as thinning is completed.
Weed often and water well every 7 - 10 days in dry weather (deep watering). Keep an eye on pest damage, remove pests immediately to minimize damage.
Swede roots can start to be harvested in early autumn and the whole crop should have been lifted by the end of April. The roots are at their best when no bigger than a grapefruit in size.
Lift the swede with the help of a fork or spade. The whole crop can be lifted by December and stored in a shed or garage in sacks or boxes of sand or compost. If preferred however the roots can be left in the ground unprotected over the winter months up until April and picked as and when needed. To store cut the leaves with a sharp knife and trim the root, do not store damaged or small roots as they will not store well.
If fine insect mesh is used to protect the crop from brassica pests make sure any gaps or holes are closed and secured as pests are very good at finding entry points!
