Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow Verbena seeds in small pots, trays or modules.
Lightly cover the seeds with a thin layer of fine compost.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator in a dark location.
The germination can be erratic and can take several weeks for the seeds to germinate.
Once germination has started remove the container from the polythene bag or propagator and place in a location with good daylight exposer and a reduced temperature, however keep away from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle prick out the strongest seedlings into individual 7.5 cm pots.
Leave the container with the un-germinated seeds in a warm location so that the remaining seeds can germinate over time.
Grow the transplants on in a well lit location protected from frost. Avoid overwatering.
When the plants are strong, plant out at the distance suggested above after all risk of frost has passed. Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days, this will allow the plants time to acclimatise to the outdoor conditions slowly. Overwinter autumn sowings in a frost free greenhouse or coldframe. Plant out in spring/summer after all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.

Growing On

After planting out, water the plants well until established.
As Verbena is a borderline hardy plant, to help protect it from severe frost in the coldest of winter months add a good thickness of dry mulch to the area in the autumn.

Verbena often flowers in the first season if the seeds are sown in early spring.
