Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

From February to May, sow the seeds on the surface of damp compost in trays or pots. (There plants will provide flowers in May - October)
Lightly cover with 2 mm of fine compost.
Place the container in a propagator or if preferred in a clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Do not exclude light as light will help improve germination. Avoid high temperatures as this may stop the seeds from germinating.
Once germination has started remove from the bag or propagator and move to a location with good daylight exposure and a reduced temperature (but still warm). Protect from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm diameter pots. Grow on in cooler (frost free) conditions.
Plant out into their final growing position after all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out so that the plants gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions.

Direct Sowing

From June - early August, sow the seeds directly in a well prepared seed bed where the flowers are to grow. When large enough to handle thin and transplant to 20 cm apart. (These plants will provide flowers the following spring)

Growing On

Water newly planted viola's regularly until established.

TIP

Flowers are edible and ideal in salads.
