The leaves of Viola Odorata the Czar are heart shaped and toothed. Each stem carries a fragrant flat faced purple violet coloured flower. Flowers are 15 mm across and are strongly scented with stems long enough for cutting.

Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention the plant will benefit from having some organic matter adding to the soil a few months before planting. Remove weeds, especially perennial weeds from the area. The plants will benefit greatly from an annual mulch to help prevent the soil from drying out over the summer months.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

It is advisable to keep the seeds chilled until ready to sow. (In a fridge at approx. 4 degrees centigrade, do not place in the freezer)
To help with drainage sow the seeds in a mix of compost and approx. 10% sand.
The seeds should be sown under cover in an unheated greenhouse or cold frame.
The seeds will germinate in the spring, some however may not and will germinate the following spring.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle prick out into 7 - 10 cm diameter pots.
Keep the compost moist but do not overwater.
Return the young plants to the cold frame or greenhouse. Keeping them in dappled shade.
When the plants are a good size harden off over several days and plant out into their final growing position.

Direct Sowing

For best results start the plants indoors.


Growing On

Keep the soil moist however do not overwater.

TIP

Dead-head regularly to prolong the flowering season.
