Pennyroyal is a highly aromatic herb with strong peppermint - like scented leaves. It has a creeping low growing habit making it an ideal fragrant ground cover. In late summer the plants produce attractive lilac - blue flowers which add colour and interest to the carpet forming plants. A low maintenance, easy to grow spreading plant ideal for growing at the front of herbaceous borders or in between pavers.

Add some well rotted manure or compost to the soil a few weeks before sowing. If the soil is heavy clay or the drainage is poor mix in a generous amount of sand and gravel to the soil also. Remove any weeds from the area.

Sow the seeds thinly on the surface of moist compost in trays, modules or pots.
Lightly firm the seeds into the surface of the compost but do not cover.
Place in a propagator or clear plastic bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Do not exclude light as this will aid germination.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location for a few days. Protect from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle transplant into 7 - 10 cm pots.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame until the plants are growing strong and all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out.
Germinate indoors for best results.
Water the young plants well until established.
Pennyroyal will self seed easily. Dead head fading blooms to prevent self seeding if preferred.
Water established plants well in dry weather.
Consuming Pennyroyal - This herb is mostly used when dry however before consuming any part of pennyroyal please consult with a qualified herbal practitioner for advice.
Pennyroyal should NEVER be consumed by pregnant women.
