Squash

There are many varieties of squashes available to the home gardener, round, long, flat, scallop edged, green, yellow, white etc.

There are two main types of squashes, winter and summer varieties.

Summer squashes such as marrows and patty pan varieties have a soft skin and are harvested regularly throughout the summer and eaten soon after picking. They are not usually stored over the winter months.

Winter squashes such as butternutt however are left on the plant to mature until October when they have developed a hard skin. This hard skin allows the squash to be stored and eaten over the winter months up until spring.
