How Groseeds Was Founded.

Posted by

Hello and welcome! My name's Moira, let me tell you a little about myself and Groseeds.

I was brought up on a hill farm amongst the beautiful rolling hills of North Wales. With many a fond childhood memory, I was very fortunate to have had a Mum who loved to cook and bake. I remember the excitement and how I would run faster down the drive towards the farmhouse after the smell of Mum's cheese and bacon flan (which was my favourite) came to greet me after my day in school.

I am a vegetable gardener, a chicken keeper and co-founder of Groseeds.

Previously I have been a waitress, a cook, a student, a designer, a driving instructor and a market gardener.

I can't remember exactly when I first got the gardening bug, perhaps it stems back to my earliest memories of gardening with my Dad in the vegetable garden on the farm.

My interest in food and food quality however started in my early twenties after I left home for the first time to go to college.

"Let Food Be Thy Medicine"

A quote from Hippocrates

A quote which unfortunately today is often forgotten. I like to know what's in the food I eat and prepare for my family, don't you?

My partner and I started growing our own fruit and vegetables so that we had control over the freshness, the chemicals introduced, the quality and of course control over the varieties grown with varieties suitable for home growing often being more flavoursome than commercial varieties which are mostly bred for shelf life and speed of growth. We rented a 2.5 acre field. Our lawnmowers were three Zwartbles sheep (very economical to run) and half an acre of the field was dedicated to our vegetable garden.

'Crid' our beautiful Zwartbles sheep with her first baby lamb.

As the months went by the local interest grew and the garden soon became a market garden where we would grow the fruit and vegetables and deliver a weekly box of fresh, seasonal produce to local residents. Customers were happy to receive local, fresh, chemical free vegetables and so were we :) (however we did often end up eating the deformed or blemished produce, our customers always got the best!)

My Mum passed away in 2010 with cancer. This made me even more determined. My Mum's diet consisted of a lot of meat and very little fruit and vegetables especially in her later years. The little nest egg Mum had left was used to expand the market garden. The garden doubled in size and so did our customer base. We also started to sell our produce at farmers markets, pubs and restaurants. We would often get requests from customers asking if we could supply them with seeds for their garden. We looked into seed prices and found that many companies overly exaggerated the price. We started supplying our customers with premium quality seeds at an affordable price mostly to the North Wales area.

Earthing up the potatoes by hand (oh the blisters!)

Unfortunately our market garden ended when my Dad passed away in 2012 due to cancer. As the family home, 35 miles away, was now empty, a decision was made to move back to the farmhouse with my partner. My uncle farms the land and we live in the farmhouse. Unfortunately there is no land available for a garden at this time however we do plan to re-start a new market garden in the future.

From the closure of the market garden we started developing the seed side of the business and Groseeds was founded.
