To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sow the seeds in March - April on the surface of damp compost in trays, modules or pots.
Cover with a thin layer of vermiculite or compost.
Place in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Do not exclude light as the seeds need light to germinate.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler but not cold location. Protect from frost and direct exposure to hot sun.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle carefully prick out into 7 - 10 cm pots. (Avoid as much damage to the roots as possible).
Grow on in frost free conditions, a greenhouse or cold frame is ideal until all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off the plants over 10 - 15 days before planting out at the distance suggested above.
In May sow the seeds thinly outdoors, where the plants are to flower and all risk of frost has passed, in a well prepared seed bed in rows 30 cm apart at the depth of 3 - 5 mm. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Water the newly sown seeds well.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin to 30 cm apart.
Water the young plants well until established.
In the early part of the growing season the plants will benefit from having some slow release balanced fertilizer adding.
Established plants will need watering regularly in dry conditions.
Dead-head spent flowers to prolong the flowering season.
