Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Growing a ground covering crop such as clover around the brassica plants helps to prevent the cabbage root fly laying its eggs at the base of the plants.
  • Cabbage white butterflies are drawn to nasturtiums. Try growing these flowers close by as a sacrificial plant. They will help to draw the pest away from the brassica crop.
  • Calendula (Pot marigold) attracts predatory insects such as lacewings, ladybirds and hoverflies who love to feast on aphids.
  • White mustard can help to draw the flea beetle away from the crop as the pest normally favours this leaf. Mint can also help to deter the flea beetle.
  • Low growing Limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees and hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids. The plant can be dug in as green manure at the end of the season.

Soil Preperation

Add a generous amount of well rotted manure or compost several months before sowing or planting. Lime if necessary as brassicas prefer alkaline soil. Add a general purpose organic fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting. Remove weeds and if the soil has only just been rotovated or dug tread over the bed to consolidate the soil as cauliflowers will not thrive in loose soil.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 2 - 3 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as germination starts reduce the heat and move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to one strong seedling per module. Keep the compost moist at all times but avoid overwatering. Plant out 2 - 3 weeks later (depending on speed of growth). Harden off before planting out to help prevent shock.
Firm the soil well around each plant and water well. Cover the bed with fine insect mesh to help keep brassica pests at bay.

Direct Sowing

For outdoor sowings, sow cauliflower seeds in a well prepared seed bed, a few weeks later transplant the seedlings into their final growing position. Sow 1 seed, 1 - 2 cm apart at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. To protect the seedlings from brassica pests cover the bed with fine insect mesh. When the seedlings are big enough to handle thin to 8 - 10 cm between each plant.
The seedlings will be ready to transplant into their final growing position when they have grown 5 - 6 true leaves. Water the young plants well the day before transplanting to reduce stress. Lift each young plant carefully including as much soil with each root as possible. Transplant at the distance recommended above. Firm the soil very well around each transplant and water well. Cover the crop with fine insect mesh.
It is advisable to sow cauliflower little and often to keep the kitchen in good supply over a long season and to avoid a glut of cauliflower curds when they all mature at the same time.

Growing On

Weed often to reduce competing plants. Water well especially in the early stages, the soil must be kept moist at all times. Cauliflower is a hungry crop and will benefit from a liquid feed. The leaves of the comfrey plant if left to soak in water for a few weeks produces a nutrient dense organic fertilizer ideal for giving vegetables a nutrient boost. To protect summer varieties from the sun the leaves can be folded inward to cover the developing curd.

Harvesting

Harvest the curds when they are tight. Start harvesting some of the curds when they are small, as baby vegetables. Cauliflower curds tend to mature at the same time which can create a glut and if the curds are left on the plant after this time they will rapidly start to flower and spoil. Cauliflowers can be easily frozen - divide the curd into sprigs, add some lime juice to a pan of water, blanch for 3 minutes in the water, drain, cool, freeze in polythene bags.
Another way to store cauliflower is to lift the whole plant and hang it upside down in a shed. Spray the curd with a little water occasionally. The curd should keep fresh for 2 - 3 weeks. The tasty leaves around the curd can also be eaten.

TIP

Pigeons especially can strip the leaves of the plants. If birds are a problem cover the cauliflowers with some netting. The netting should not touch the plants otherwise the pigeons will land on the netting and eat the leaves through it.
