Sow 3 - 4 seeds per 4 cm module. As soon as the seedlings start to germinate move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse.
Harden off over a few days so the plants get used to the outdoor temperature. Plant out at the distance suggested above. Firm the soil around each plant and water well. If growing over the summer months cover with a fine insect mesh to keep pests away.
Sow 1 seed every 2 cm at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. Summer sowings will benefit from being covered by fine mesh to protect the young vulnerable seedlings from insect damage. Thin the seedlings in stages to eventually 25 cm apart. The larger thinning's can be eaten.
Water well in dry weather otherwise they will run to seed. Regular weeding is required. Kailaan will tolerate frost.
Harvest about 10 - 12 weeks after sowing. The stems, leaves and flowers are edible. To harvest cut the stems with a sharp knife just above soil level. If left to grow large the stems become tougher in texture. Kailaan will store in the fridge for 1 - 2 weeks in a polythene bag.
Keep the surrounding area free from weeds and remove areas where slugs and snails may be lurking in.
