Sow Marigold seeds onto damp compost in containers, trays or modules.
Lightly cover the seeds with some fine compost or vermiculite.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator.
Once germination has started remove the container from the bag or propagator. Move to a location with good daylight and a reduced temperature. Keep the vulnerable seedlings away from frost.
When the seedlings are large enough to handle prick out into individual 7 - 10 cm diameter pots.
Grow on in a well lit location until the plants are strong and a good size. Plant out at the distance suggested above when all risk of frost has passed.
Before planting out harden off over 7 - 10 days to acclimatize the plants to the outdoor temperature.
Sow the seeds directly in a well prepared seed bed in spring where the flowers are to grow once all risk of frost has passed. Transplant the seedlings when large enough to handle to 30 - 40 cm apart.
Water the plants well after planting out until established.
Feed and water regularly in the growing season to encourage more flowers to grow.
If growing in containers use a loam-based potting compost such as John Innes No. 2. In the height of the growing season feed the plants weekly and water frequently in hot weather.
Dead-head frequently to prolong the flowering season.
