Other Names - Garden Beet, Globe Beetroot…

A great tasting sweet beetroot with a deep yellow and tender flesh. The flesh unlike red beetroot does not bleed and therefore produces less mess in the kitchen! Best eaten when golf or tennis ball size. For an extra sweet intense flavour try baking the beetroot whole or roast as beetroot chips. Adds a vibrant colour to the plate.

  • Attractive and unusual yellow fleshed beetroot.
  • Leaves can be added to salads or cooked like spinach.
  • Sweet and tender, an ideal variety for children to grow.

Suitable For - Vegetable plot, raised beds, container garden, limited space

Sowing Months - April - July

Harvest - July - November

Gardening is about finding the right balance! Try growing Companion Plants close by to help deter pests.

  • Lettuce is a good companion plant to grow alongside beetroot as they do not compete with one another.
  • Beetroot and onions grow well together.
  • Dwarf French beans are great companion plants.
  • Kohl rabi and beetroot are well matched.
  • Comfrey leaves can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer which is ideal for giving the roots a boost. It can also be used as a compost accelerator, a slug repellent and a nutritional mulch.

Soil Preperation

Remove any weeds especially perennials from the area. Add some organic matter such as compost or well rotted manure a few weeks before sowing or planting. Not only will this add valuable nutrients but it will also help with moisture retention.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

For early sowings it is advisable to sow bolt resistant varieties such as 'Boltardy'. Beetroot seeds come in clusters and one cluster will produce several plants. Sow 2 - 3 seeds (clusters) per 4 cm module. When the seedlings are large enough to handle thin to 5 - 6 strong seedlings per module. After 3 - 6 weeks from sowing the young plants should be ready to plant out at the distance suggested above. The plants will need to be hardened off over 7 - 10 days before planting out. If there is a danger of frost cover with horticultural fleece.

Direct Sowing

For early sowings sow bolt resistant varieties such as 'Boltardy'. Beetroot seeds come in 'clusters' and one clusters will produce several plants. Sow 2 seeds (clusters) in each 5 cm station at the depth and row distance suggested above. Cover the seeds with soil and water well. If the weather is cold cover the bed with horticultural fleece until the plants start to grow strong. Beetroot are best sown little and often, sow ever 3 - 4 weeks until early July.

Growing On

Growth at first will be slow. If the weather is cold cover the bed with horticultural fleece until the plants start to grow strong. When direct sown seedlings are about 2.5 cm tall thin out to leave one plant per 5 cm station. Module sown beetroot do not require thinning after transplanting as the beetroot in each clump will grow at different rates.
Keep the ground weed free. Water the beetroot well every 10 - 14 days, more often if growing in containers, drought will produce a beetroot with a woody texture and very low yields. The plants will benefit from a mulch of compost to help keep the soil moist in the height of summer.

Harvesting

Summer beetroot are best eaten when they are around the size of a golf ball. When direct sown beetroots grown for winter storage reach this size, harvest by pulling out alternate plants. This will allow the remaining roots to grow larger for storage purposes. When module sown beetroot reach golf ball size gently twist out the larger roots, leaving the remaining 4 - 5 roots to grow on.
To grow beetroot for storing over the winter months allow the roots to grow to around cricket ball size. In mild areas and mild winters beetroot can be left in the ground over the winter months with a generous covering of straw or thick fleece. However, severe frost can make the roots rot so if in doubt lift the crop before any severe frosts arrive.
To store, remove the leaves, leaving about 4 - 5 cm of stem. Store in a frost free garage or shed in paper bags or in boxes surrounded by damp compost. It is advisable to eat or pickle any damaged or small roots less than a cricket ball in size as they will not store well.

TIP

To prevent bolting (running to seed) for early sowings especially, grow bolt resistant varieties such as 'Boltardy'. Keep the soil moist to reduce stress.
