Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow the seeds on the surface of moist compost in trays, pots or modules.
Do not cover the seeds as they need light to germinate.
Place the container in a clear polythene bag and seal or if preferred place in a propagator. Germinate at the temperature suggested above. Do not exclude light however avoid direct exposure to hot sun.
Once the seeds start to germinate remove from the bag or propagator and place in a cooler but not cold location.
Transplant when large enough to handle into pots 7 - 10 cm wide.
Grow on in frost free conditions in a greenhouse or cold frame is ideal.
When all risk of frost has passed and the plants are growing strong plant out into their final growing position.
Harden off over 10 - 15 days before planting out so that the plants can acclimatize to the outdoor temperature.

Direct Sowing

It is advisable to start the plants indoors rather than sowing direct.

Growing On

Water the young plants well until established.
Feed monthly with a balanced liquid fertilizer.
Mimulus do not like dry conditions. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season.
After the first flush of flowers, cut back to encourage more blooms to grow.

TIP

For a long flowering season sow the seeds in succession every 2 -3 weeks from March to May.
