  • One of the best plants for attracting pollinating insects into the area is the Phacelia. It also attracts aphid eating insects such as ladybirds and lacewings. At the end of the season it can be dug into the soil as a green manure.
  • Borage is an easy to grow cucumber tasting herb. The pretty blue flowers attract bees and pollinating insects into the garden and is often used by bee keepers.
  • Mint - this herb is believed to improve the health and flavour of the peas.
  • Low growing Limnanthes helps to keep the surrounding soil moist, supresses weed growth, attracts bees and hoverflies who's larvae feed on aphids. The plant can also be dug in as green manure at the end of the season.

Soil Preperation

The soil needs to be fertile, free draining but water retentive. Add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the bed a few months before sowing or planting. Remove weeds and lime if necessary. Add some general purpose organic fertilizer 1 - 2 weeks before sowing or planting.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow 3 - 4 seeds per 5 - 7 cm module or pot. Once the seeds start to germinate move to an area with good daylight exposure, a windowsill or greenhouse is ideal. Keep the compost moist, but do not overwater.
2 - 3 weeks later (depending on speed of growth) plant out into their final growing position. Harden off over 7 - 10 days so the plants can acclimatise to the outdoor temperature.
Peas are best grown in double rows, with 25 cm between the 2 rows. In each row plant one module every 15 cm. Firm the soil around each clump of plants and water well. Cover early sowings with horticultural fleece.

Direct Sowing

Avoid sowing outdoors too early, pea seeds will easily rot in cold damp soil. Peas are best sown in double rows, with 25 cm between the two rows. In each row sow 3 - 4 seeds per station. Each station should be 15 cm apart. Cover the seeds with soil and water well.
To protect the seeds and young seedlings from bird damage cover the bed with fine mesh or a wire mesh guard. Early sowings should be covered with horticultural fleece until the plants start to grow strong.

Growing On

Weed regularly to keep competing plants under control. Water well in dry weather otherwise the production of pods will be significantly reduced. The pea plants will benefit from a mulch of compost before the hot summer weather arrives to help prevent the surrounding soil from drying out.
Pea plants can grow nitrogen nodules on their roots. To make use of this additional nitrogen, at the end of the season cut the pea stems just above ground level and transfer to the compost heap leaving the roots in the ground for the following crops to benefit.

Harvesting

Pick the pea pods regularly to encourage the plants to grow more pods. Peas are at their sweetest when picked young. For the best results eat within 1 hour of picking to retain as much sugar in the pea as possible before it converts to starch. Harvest when the pods are 6 - 8 cm in length.
Traditional varieties are harvested when the peas have swollen to a good size, however there should still be a gap between each pea in the pod. The peas are shelled and the tough pods are usually discarded.
Peas will keep in the fridge in a polythene bag for 1 - 2 weeks however they are at their best when eaten fresh. Peas can also be frozen for later use or left to dry on the plant. However if at the end of the season the weather is wet, lift the whole plant and hang indoors for several weeks to dry the remaining pods. Store dried peas in an airtight container for winter use in stews, casseroles and soups.

TIP

The leaves of the Comfrey plant can be used to make a nutrient rich liquid fertilizer, used as a compost accelerator, a slug repellent and a nutritional mulch.
