Anniversary is a Spencer type sweet pea and is an excellent variety for exhibition work or for growing in the borders. The highly scented, large frilly white blooms have pretty pink picotee edging. The delicate flowers have strong stems making them excellent for cutting.

Soil Preperation

To help with moisture retention and fertility add a good amount of well rotted manure or compost to the soil 4 - 8 weeks before planting. If the soil is a heavy clay add some gritty sand to help with drainage. Remove weeds from the area.

Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

Sow indoors in March and Autumn for planting out in spring.
Sow 2 - 3 seeds in root trainers or 7.5 cm pots at the depth suggested above. The compost should be moist but not sodden.
Place the container in a propagator or clear polythene bag and seal. Germinate at the temperature suggested above.
Once germination has started remove from the propagator or bag and place in a cooler location. Protect from frost.
Grow on in a frost free greenhouse or cold frame.
To encourage a bushier growth pinch out the growing tips once the third pair of leaves have opened.
Autumn sowings may need potting on into larger pots. Overwinter in a greenhouse or coldframe. Plant out autumn sown sweet peas in mid spring and spring sown peas in late spring.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out to reduce shock.

Direct Sowing

In April, sow the sweet pea seeds direct, 5 - 10 cm apart into a well prepared seed bed where the flowers are to grow at the depth suggested above. The soil should be a fine tilth.
Water the newly sown seeds well.
When large enough to handle thin the seedlings to 15 - 20 cm apart.
To encourage a bushier growth pinch out the growing tips once the third pair of leaves have opened.
Water young plants well until established.

Growing On

Plant out indoor sowings 20 - 25 cm apart. They should be positioned to one side of each support (strong canes, trellis or fence etc.) with the bottom shoots level with the soil.
As the plants grow taller tie the stems loosely to the supports to encourage strong straight growth.
Liquid feed every 2 - 3 weeks with a balanced fertilizer from mid summer onwards.

TIP

Dead-head spent blooms regularly to encourage more flowers to grow.
