Sowing Guide

Early Sowing/Module Sowing

For best results, sow bellflower seeds in early spring or autumn on the surface of damp compost in trays or pots.
Lightly cover with 2 mm of fine compost.
Place the container in a coldframe. Keep the compost moist but not sodden.
The seeds may take some time to germinate (depending on the time of year when sown). When large enough to handle, transplant the seedlings into individual pots. Grow on in a protected area such as a coldframe.
Plant out when the bellflower plants are growing strong and all risk of frost has passed.
Harden off over 7 - 10 days before planting out so that the plants gradually acclimatise to outdoor conditions.

Direct Sowing

Scatter the seeds over a well prepared seed bed in spring or autumn where the flowers are to grow. Lightly cover with fine soil. Keep the soil moist but not sodden. When large enough to handle thin and transplant to 30 - 40cm apart.

Growing On

After flowering, cut back to encourage a second flush of flowers.
Young seedlings are vulnerable to slugs and snail damage. Keep weeds under control and ensure slug havens (such as stones, weeds etc.) have been removed prior to sowing.

TIP

Better results can be achieved from sowing the seeds in trays in a coldframe, protecting the young vulnerable plants from slug damage until they are strong enough to be planted out.
